What is a proper pronunciation?
This may refer to generally agreed-upon sequences of sounds used in speaking a given word or language in a specific dialect ("correct" or "standard" pronunciation) or simply the way a particular individual speaks a word or language. Words' pronunciations can be found in reference works such as dictionaries.
Some words that are stressed on the first syllable and start with pro- are often pronounced differently. Canadians often say words like process, project, and progress with an /oʊ/ sound (think of how you pronounce the letter “o”, whereas most Americans say these words with the vowel /ɑ/ (think “ahh”).
To make the /ɪ/ sound:
The /ɪ/ vowel is a high-front sound. Your tongue should be positioned high in your mouth, and shifted toward the front. Your lips should be relaxed, and only slightly open. Vibrate your vocal cords with your mouth in this position.
In the case of docile and other words ending in –ile, Canadians in our survey overwhelmingly prefer the /aɪ/ vowel in the second syllable, as in “awhile”, the variant common to Britain, as opposed to the typical American pronunciation /ə/, as in ”fossil”.

Short vowels usually appear at the beginning of the word or between two consonants. Examples of short vowels are found in the words: cat, pig, bus.

Therefore, the best way to remember the difference between lax and tense vowels is to learn which vowels can be termed as tense and lax. The lax vowels in contemporary English include, /I/ (as i in bit)
