What are the 9 types of risk in banking?
The OCC has defined nine categories of risk for bank supervision purposes. These risks are: Credit, Interest Rate, Liquidity, Price, Foreign Exchange, Transaction, Compliance, Strategic and Reputation. These categories are not mutually exclusive; any product or service may expose the bank to multiple risks.
All the transactions in a bank have one or more of the major risks such as liquidity risk, market risk, operational risk, credit/ default risk, interest rate risk, etc. Certain risks are contracted at transaction level (credit risk) and others are managed at the aggregated level such as interest or liquidity risk.
While the types and degree of risks an organization may be exposed to depend upon a number of factors such as its size, complexity business activities, volume etc, it is believed that generally the risks banks face are Credit, Market, Liquidity, Operational, Compliance / Legal /Regulatory and Reputation risks.
The major risks faced by banks include credit, operational, market, and liquidity risks. Prudent risk management can help banks improve profits as they sustain fewer losses on loans and investments.
The OCC's Semiannual Risk Perspective report draws attention to four key areas as emerging risks for financial institutions in the second half of 2023 – and likely through 2024. These include liquidity risk, credit risk, compliance risk and cybersecurity risk.
Rising deposit rates, broader market liquidity contraction, and increased reliance on wholesale funding started to impact net interest margins through the first half of 2023. Competition for deposits and higher interest rates are raising deposit rates.
There are five categories of operational risk: people risk, process risk, systems risk, external events risk, and legal and compliance risk.
Professor Westerman's belief is the conflict between the business strategic outcome and IT's natural resistance to manage and maintain the changes and exceptions into perpetuity can be addressed by: thinking about IT's risk, and. focusing a dialogue with IT on the four A's (Availability, Access, Accuracy, Agility)
- strategic risk - eg a competitor coming on to the market.
- compliance and regulatory risk - eg introduction of new rules or legislation.
- financial risk - eg interest rate rise on your business loan or a non-paying customer.
- operational risk - eg the breakdown or theft of key equipment.
Some common financial risks are credit, operational, foreign investment, legal, equity, and liquidity risks.
What is financial risk in banking?
What Is Financial Risk? Financial risk is the possibility of losing money on an investment or business venture. Some more common and distinct financial risks include credit risk, liquidity risk, and operational risk. Financial risk is a type of danger that can result in the loss of capital to interested parties.
What is reputational risk? Reputational risk is the risk of failure to meet stakeholder expectations as a result of any event, behaviour, action or inaction, either by HSBC itself, our employees or those with whom we are associated, that may cause stakeholders to form a negative view of the Group.
Payments accepted online, over the phone, and through email are all examples of card-not-present transactions. Because it's easier for fraudsters to use stolen credit card numbers when they don't have to show a physical card, this type of payment is considered a high-risk transaction.

The usual three — State Bank of India among public sector banks and HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank among private banks — found mention in the list. Colloquially, such banks are reckoned as 'too big to fail' and certainly so because they represent over 50 per cent of the country's total banking system.
Before Silicon Valley Bank collapsed in March, it had been 28 months since a U.S. bank went up in smoke — the longest stretch without a failure in more than 15 years. SVB's unexpected demise kicked off a historic year for bank failures .

Banking Turmoil 2023
The collapse of banks, such as Silicon Valley Bank and First Republic Bank, resulted from deficiencies in risk management and a lack of proactive supervision; they are unrelated to the bad loan practices of the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008.
In short, if you have less than $250,000 in your account at an FDIC-insured US bank, then you almost certainly have nothing to worry about. Each deposit account owner will be insured up to $250,000 - so, for example, if you have a joint account with your spouse, your money will be insured up to $500,000.
How do banks lose money when interest rates rise?
While rising interest rates give banks opportunities to increase earnings by pushing up rates charged on loans, they also could increase the cost of liabilities and decrease the value of investment securities held as assets.
Systematic Risk – The overall impact of the market. Unsystematic Risk – Asset-specific or company-specific uncertainty. Political/Regulatory Risk – The impact of political decisions and changes in regulation.
- Business Risk. Business Risk is internal issues that arise in a business. ...
- Strategic Risk. Strategic Risk is external influences that can impact your business negatively or positively. ...
- Hazard Risk. Most people's perception of risk is on Hazard Risk.
At the heart of everything, the company encourages its employees to take 2 minutes to assess a job task for any risks. The more personnel pay attention, the more pairs of eyes are available to identify, report, and neutralize possible hazards.
Terminating Risk
It is the approach that should be most favored where possible and simply involves risk elimination. This can be done by altering an inherently risky process or practice to remove the risk. The same can be used when reviewing practices and processes in all areas of the business.
