How do you respond to an open question?
Open-ended questions are questions that cannot be answered with a simple 'yes' or 'no', and instead require the respondent to elaborate on their points. Open-ended questions help you see things from a customer's perspective as you get feedback in their own words instead of stock answers.
Open-ended questions begin with the following words: why, how, what, describe, tell me about..., or what do you think about...
- How can we help you? ...
- How did you find us? ...
- How was our customer service support? ...
- What made you shop with us today? ...
- What made you choose us? ...
- What do you like the most about our store? ...
- How can we improve?
Definition. Open-ended questions are questions that allow someone to give a free-form answer. Closed-ended questions can be answered with “Yes” or “No,” or they have a limited set of possible answers (such as: A, B, C, or All of the Above).
Open-ended questions prompt the beginning of a longer conversation by asking questions starting with "why," "how," and "what if?" Closed-ended questions can be answered with single-word answers, such as "yes" or "no."
- Why did you apply for this position?
- Explain how you manage tight deadlines at work.
- What are your biggest strengths and why?
- Why do you think you're the right candidate for this position?
- Why did you leave your previous position?
- Where do you see yourself in the future?
- Tell me about your relationship with your supervisor.
- How do you see your future?
- Tell me about the children in this photograph.
- What is the purpose of government?
- Why did you choose that answer?
: not known for sure : uncertain. Her intentions are open to question. The author's exact meaning is open to question.
Questions like “What did you want to be when you were a child?” and “What is your favorite food and why?” are open ended questions examples where your conversational partner is encouraged to explain their answer or reason about the question.
Open-ended questions are queries that can't be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” By using these types of questions, you invite the respondent to share more information about themselves and their experiences. This helps to open the conversation and often helps people feel more at ease.
What is an example of open-ended communication?
Example of an open-ended question
You may not learn much by asking this question. What sports do you like? This is an open-ended question. The person has to reply with at least one sport, or else say they don't like sports… and you might even find out why!
Leading questions suggest the answer that you expect to get and literally “lead” the witness. An open ended question does not suggest the answer. An Example: Assume that you are trying to establish that the deponent was stealing office supplies and that he knew that he should not have been taking those supplies.
THREE TYPES OF QUESTIONS: 1. Factual 2. Interpretive 3. Evaluative Page 5 FACTUAL QUESTIONS Page 6 FACTUAL QUESTIONS Everyone will eventually agree on the answer.
- What will make this appointment worthwhile for you today? ...
- What motivated you to take this call with me? ...
- How did you get involved in this project? ...
- What's the most important priority to you in this? ...
- What is the biggest challenge you face with your business today?
having no fixed answer: an open-ended question.
open-ended interview
an interview in which the interviewee is asked questions that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no.
An open-ended question is just that—the answer is open-ended, you are not trying to predict or instruct the outcome but want an authentic response from your partner. Whereas closed-ended questions ask for a one word response, open-ended questions invite discussion and sharing.
A simple example of a close-ended question includes “Do you like ice cream?” Here, respondents will answer with a simple “Yes” or “No.” Close-ended questions are opposite to open-ended questions, where respondents can share their thoughts and opinions in-depth by replying in an open-text format answer.
Every half-open question could then be assigned to one of two sub-categories: if the pupil gave a one word answer or no answer at all, then it was coded as half-open:closed (HO:C); if the pupil elaborated on a one word answer, then it was coded as half-open:open (HO:O).

What is asking open questions?
Open-ended questions are questions that require a participant to answer in their own words. They can provide researchers with more information than a simple yes or no answer.
Open-ended questions, also commonly called subjective questions, are questions that cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no". They typically demand longer answers and require the respondent to go into detailed descriptions.
One of the biggest benefits of open-ended questions is the potential for wholly new information and customer insights. Because there's no limit to possible responses, you're likely to receive information and real opinions you hadn't previously even considered.
Open-ended questions are those that provide respondents with a question prompt and provide them a space in which to construct their own response. Closed-ended questions, alternatively, provide a question prompt and ask respondents to choose from a list of possible responses.
Real-life mathematical problems or mathematical investigations are of this type – e.g. “How much water can our school save on a period of four months?” or “Design a better gym room considering the amount of money we can spend.” FEATURES of open-ended problems: There is no fixed answer (many possible answers)
These are the most common types of open-ended questions: Classical text question. Matrix with text inputs. Test with unfinished sentences.
There are four types of questions in English: general or yes/no questions, questions using wh-words, choice questions, and disjunctive or tag/tail questions.
(Who, what, why, how, where, when, with what)
- What do we want all students to know and be able to do?
- How will we know if they learn it?
- How will we respond when some students do not learn?
- How will we extend the learning for students who are already proficient?
- Help me with your reaction to what I just said.
- Give me some feedback on the choices I just presented.
- What are your thoughts?
- Would you tell me more about ___?
- Can you help me understand that a little better?
- How does that process work now?
- How do you see this happening?
What is an example of open-ended questions for students?
1) What is one thing you would like me to know about you? 2) What is one skill you know you need to improve upon as a college student? How can this course support you in improving that skill? 3) What are some strategies that have helped you feel successful in other classes?
- Tell me about you. ...
- Working on anything exciting lately? ...
- What's your story? ...
- What personal passion project are you working on right now? ...
- How do you know the host? ...
- What was the highlight of your day today? ...
- What was the highlight of your week?
Open-ended questions are those that provide respondents with a question prompt and provide them a space in which to construct their own response. Closed-ended questions, alternatively, provide a question prompt and ask respondents to choose from a list of possible responses.
Open-ended questions are questions that do not provide participants with a predetermined set of answer choices, instead allowing the participants to provide responses in their own words. Open-ended questions are often used in qualitative research methods and exploratory studies.
An open-ended question is a question that requires a full answer, using the subject's own knowledge or feelings. These questions are objective, do not lead the person being asked, and result in an answer that requires an explanation. [1] Examples of open-ended questions include: "What happened after I left?"
Questions like this: “So what do you think you want to do?” • “Have I got it right?” • “Did I leave anything out?” • “Is there anything else you think I should know at this point?” • “Did I misunderstand anything?” • “So what else can you tell me about…?
